About the Architectural Robotic Theatre

The Architectural Robotics Theatre is an action research project aimed at developing, analysing and improving the role of industrial robotic arms on the teaching and practice of Architecture, through a series of experimental, design-led interventions, workshops and performances.

A.R.T. aims to enable discussions about the integration of industrial robotic arms in the architectural profession, and its impact on design and the way we perceive the construction process. In parallel, the Architectural Robotics Theatre speculates on the way robotic choreography and interaction alters spatial perception, through a poetic approach on space navigation.

A.R.T. is forming a unique international interdisciplinary experimental platform, where pioneers in design and fabrication both from academia and practice come together and redefine the role of design through the lenses of robotic technology.

 

The Architectural Robotics Theatre project envisions to form a remarkable experience both for the students and the public, promoting a new perception of education through making, while contributing to the wider research field of robotic fabrication in Architecture. Special interest lies on creating cutting-edge processes that ensure continuity between the design and its materialisation, through the customization of industrial robotic arm technology. At the same time, emphasis is put on the contextualization of architectural robotics and the exploration of their potential through a theoretical approach.

 

A.R.T. will be structured in a series of design-led interventions exploring the capabilities and potential of robotic arms, and specifically of the one located at the University of Westminster large ‘shop-window’ overlooking Marylebone Road and Madame Tussaud’s. The program will involve external collaborators and experts from the field of architectural robotics, as well as students from Westminster architecture programmes. Four residencies will be developed throughout the year, each one of which will include student-focused teaching workshops, and culminate in a week-long public performance, enacted by the robot in the Robotics Theatre.

Themes of the performances will explore one or more of the following interrelated themes:

-Material Computation in Robotic Fabrication – Non-linearity and emergence

-Robotic Assembly – Part-to-whole relationships

-Robotic Vision and Interactive Design – Real-time feedback loops

-Augmented Realities – Mapping digital data on the physical world
